Mr Vijay Santhanam
MBChB, BDS, MDS, MRCS, FDSRCS (Eng), FRCS (OMFS), PGCME (Cambridge)
Vijay is dually qualified in Medicine and Dentistry and is on the General Medical Council Specialist list for Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS). Vijay completed early surgical posts in units across the UK. He completed specialist higher surgical training at St George’s University Hospital, Queen Victoria Hospital and the Royal Surrey County Hospital.
Vijay was awarded the Intercollegiate Specialty Board FRCS in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery in 2012. He took up his first Consultant post at St George’s University Hospital before moving to Cambridge University Hospitals in 2014. He is currently the Clinical Lead for Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics and Restorative Dentistry. He has a wealth of experience in oral surgery, implantology and advanced bone grafting. He has been instrumental in the adoption of 3D and virtual surgical planning for treatment of various Maxillofacial indications at CUH and lectures and conducts surgical masterclasses nationally and internationally.
Vijay has published on several areas of maxillofacial surgery and he has special interests in the treatment of facial deformity, jaw joint surgery, facial cosmetic and reconstructive surgery and the treatment of skin cancer. Vijay is a core member of the specialist skin cancer multi-disciplinary team at Cambridge University Hospitals and works closely with the Neurosurgical team to treat complex, craniofacial trauma patients suffering multiple injuries.
Vijay is active in the field of Surgical Education and is a Regional Surgical Advisor, Advisory Network Group Member and Member of the Surgical Specialty Board at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He was past member of the Specialist Advisory Committee for OMFS training and National Simulation Lead for OMFS. He has active involvement with the Cambridge Medical School as a Research Advisor with the Department of Physiology, Development and Neurology and has supervised a number of projects in surgical anatomy. He is also a member of the Professional Advisory Committee at the Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust, Cambridge.
Vijay has overseas experience including training in India, Austria and the United States. He is an active global health volunteer and has led Facial Surgery missions to Botswana and India. He is scheduled for a mission to Jordan to treat Syrian war refugees with traumatic facial deformities later in the year.
